2022 Tour de France Bikes and Equipment

The Tour de France is the cycling’s pinnacle event of the year. In 2018, it was estimated to garner over 3.5 billion views on the TV, only to be surpassed by the 2018 World Cup (3.6 billion views) and the 2008 Beijing Olympics (4.7 billion views).

This represents the perfect opportunity for bike and equipment manufacturers to increase their visibility. Each year, many brands use the Tour de France to launch and showcase their latest products to cycling fans.

This article provides a detailed rundown of all the bikes and equipment used by the 22 teams competing in the 2022 Tour de France. 18 of the teams automatically qualify as they’re part of the World Tour and four are invited by the organizer, ASO.

While all the bike frames are sponsored, not all other components such as the groupset, wheelset, saddles, pedals, tires, and power meters are sponsored. The teams who don’t have a sponsor for a particular component will buy their preferred brands. It’s often hard to differentiate between sponsored or purchased equipment.

Before we go deeper, let’s take a look at the overarching theme of the 2022 Tour de France team bikes and equipment.

Type of bikes

Depending on the bike brands, each team will have a choice of three types of bikes for the various Tour stages depending on the terrain profile,

  • Lightweight, climbing bike for hilly and mountainous stages
  • Aero bike for flat and sprint stages
  • TT bike for time trials

Some brands such as Colnago, Cube, Pinarello, and Specialized doesn’t differentiate between lightweight and aero bike. So the teams riding these brands only have a choice of a road and TT bike.

Bike brand

The majority of the leading bike brands are present at the Tour de France with the exception of Argon 18, Bianchi, and LOOK. Canyon and Specialized have the biggest presence with three teams each riding their bikes, while the other brands are evenly represented.

Groupset

Shimano dominates the groupset presence with 17 teams using their latest 12-speed, Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 R9270 groupset, followed by the Campagnolo Super Record EPS with three teams and SRAM Red eTap AXS with two.

All the teams are running electronic groupsets and disc brakes this year.

Wheels

There are 11 wheelset brands present at the Tour. Shimano has the biggest presence with six teams running its latest R9200 wheelsets that come in 36/50/60mm rim depths.

The three teams that ride a Specialized bike use its sister brand, Roval wheelsets. The major wheelset brands missing this year are Enve and Fulcrum.

Each wheelset manufacturer provides the rider with various rim depths from shallow (30 to 45mm) to mid (45 to 55mm) and deep (above 55mm) depending on the day’s terrain.
