About MrMamil.com

The term MAMIL (Middle Aged Man in Lycra) was coined around 2007 and gained popularity in the UK after the success of British Cycling in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. It was included in the Oxford Dictionary in 2014, where the official definition of MAMIL is,

“A middle-aged man who is a very keen road cyclist, typically one who rides an expensive bike and wears the type of clothing associated with professional cyclists”.

Oxford Dictionary, 2014

The MAMIL phenomenon is often attributed to the increased availability of high-end bicycles and cycling gear and the health benefits of cycling. Many middle-aged men see cycling as a way to stay fit and active and as a way to connect with others who share their passion for the sport.

While the MAMIL trend is often associated with men in their 40s and 50s, it can also include men in their 30s and 60s. Some critics of the MAMIL trend see it as a sign of a midlife crisis or a form of conspicuous consumption, as high-end bicycles and cycling gear can be quite expensive.

About MrMamil.com

I’m Alex Lee, the person behind MrMamil.com, which I started in 2021. Being a father and a full-time electronic engineer for ten years, my life was all about circuits, systems, and a sedentary lifestyle.

Like many engineers, my job had me chained to a desk most days. Then, a few friends introduced me to cycling. Initially, it was a means to shed those stubborn pounds I’d packed on from years of sitting at a desk.

But it wasn’t long before I found myself addicted to the rush of adrenaline, the feeling of freedom, and the pure joy of being part of a passionate cycling community. Now, I regularly clock 150 miles a week.

Off the bike, my engineer’s curiosity takes over. I spend countless hours staying up to date with the latest developments in cycling, from cutting-edge bikes to state-of-the-art gear. And just like in my engineering days, I break it down into easy-to-understand and digestible content here on MrMamil.com.
