About MrMamil.com

The term MAMIL (Middle Aged Man in Lycra) was coined around 2007 and gained popularity in the UK after the success of British Cycling in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. It was included in the Oxford Dictionary in 2014, where the official definition of MAMIL is,

“A middle-aged man who is a very keen road cyclist, typically one who rides an expensive bike and wears the type of clothing associated with professional cyclists”.

Oxford Dictionary, 2014

The MAMIL phenomenon is often attributed to the increased availability of high-end bicycles and cycling gear and the health benefits of cycling. Many middle-aged men see cycling as a way to stay fit and active and as a way to connect with others who share their passion for the sport.

While the MAMIL trend is often associated with men in their 40s and 50s, it can also include men in their 30s and 60s. Some critics of the MAMIL trend see it as a sign of a midlife crisis or a form of conspicuous consumption, as high-end bicycles and cycling gear can be quite expensive.

About MrMamil.com

Alex, a father, and avid cyclist started MrMamil.com in late 2021. As a trained electronic engineer with over a decade of experience, Alex has a knack for breaking down complex technical information into digestible tidbits for his audience.

Now in his early forties, he’s a middle-aged man in lycra, MAMIL. He understands the appeal of the MAMIL phenomenon and why it’s often associated with men in their 40s and 50.

He got into road cycling in 2010, and it quickly became a central part of his daily routine, riding between 150 to 200 miles (240 to 320km) weekly. He loves the freedom and adventure of discovering new routes and pushing myself to new limits. He also enjoyed the social aspect of the sport, meeting new friends and connecting with like-minded people who shared the same passion.

How MrMamil.com started

Over the years, Alex has acquired extensive knowledge and valuable experience in cycling. Despite having some prior experience, he recognized much more to learn.

Alex spent countless hours researching bikes, gears, riding techniques, and training methods to improve as a cyclist. He even learned bike maintenance skills from a close friend who is a professional bike mechanic.

His personal growth and learning journey motivated Alex to contribute to the cycling community. He wanted to create a resource to help others uncover the excitement and adventure inherent in the sport.

Thus, MrMamil.com was conceived.
