Spend a little time shopping for a road bike, and you’ll quickly find many brands on the market today.

You probably have heard of and seen some popular bike brands such as Specialized, Trek, and Giant. If you take a closer look, you’ll see that there are many other lesser-known brands out there that make equally good, if not better, bikes.

Navigating through the different brands can quickly become overwhelming. From my own experience when buying my first road bike and speaking to many cyclists over the years, I’ve noticed that the bike brand plays an important role in the decision-making process.

This article will cover the leading bike brands’ history and the bike models they’re well-known for.

Argon 18

  • Founded : 1989

Factor’s first model was released in 2007. It boasted incredible performance but was not UCI-legal. With the help of David Millar, the company has since developed three new models that meet UCI standards.

Factor is known for its uncompromising commitment to quality and performance, with a focus on advanced aerodynamics. The Factor O2 VAM is a lightweight bike designed for climbing, while the Factor Ostro VAM is an aerodynamic model built for speed and efficiency.

Giant Bicycles

Merida has a strong presence in the pro cycling world, with its bikes ridden by Team Bahrain Victorious in the World Tour. The team rides the Merida Reacto for flat and rolling stages and the Merida Scultura for mountain stages.

In Februay 2023, Pinarello retired its Prince, Paris, and GAN road bike lineup. Currently, there are only two lineups; Pinarello Dogma F (race) and Pinarello X (endurance).

Pinarello has an impressive track record of victories, having been the bike sponsor for Team Sky from 2010 through its switch to Ineos Grenadiers in 2019. In that time, Pinarello’s bikes have been ridden to multiple Tour De France victories by Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas, and Egan Bernal.

In 2016, Pinarello was acquired by US-based private equity group L Catterton, but the company continues to maintain its base in Treviso, Italy.

Scott Bikes
